Inside the Alumni Studio
Inside the Alumni Studio is an event where a notable alumnus or alumna is featured to share their stories about what lead to their success, what they accomplished during their years at UC Irvine, as well as what advice they would give to current Anteaters.
This event has already featured some great alumni including Erin Gruwell. Erin Gruwell began teaching at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. Like many first year teachers, Erin was assigned the unmotivated, unnoticed, and “unteachable” students. Erin strongly believed that education could overcome even the worst kinds of adversity and was determined that her 150 “at-risk” students should receive the same opportunities as everyone else. Four years later all 150 students, dubbed the Freedom Writers, graduated from high school. Her story was adapted to film featuring Hillary Swank and Patrick Dempsey.
Another past speaker includes Kent Yamaguchi who is the Director of the Santa Ana Zoo. There are only a little more than 200 zoos open in the United States, making the director’s position one of the most sought after positions nationwide! Not only did he give us great advice about professional success and entertain us with his easy-going humor, but he also brought in a special guest related to the anteater: an armadillo!
This program gives students insight on things they can change for the better during their school years and what can happen after graduation. It is also a great way for students to make connections and to learn tools to be successful. We welcome all students and alumni to participate in the event to gain understanding and knowledge of how Anteaters can reach their full potential.
