Cap & Gown/Regalia Frequesntly Asked Questions

  • Do I have to wear a Cap & Gown during my ceremony?

    Yes, appropriate regalia is required for all in-person ceremonies. The required items include a black cap, gown and official UCI tassel (and hood for Master's and Doctorate students). Exceptions include UCI Ph.D. professional regalia.

  • Are sashes and stoles required?

    Sashes and stoles are not required but if students would like them, they can be purchased at The Hill.

  • What is included in my Basic Cap & Gown package?

    Basic cap and gown packages for bachelor’s degree recipients include a cap, tassel, and stacked “2020” souvenir tassel. Master’s and doctorate students will additionally receive a school-specific hood in their basic cap and gown package.

  • What Items Are Available for Purchase?

  • How do I know what size gown I need to order?

    Your gown size is based on your height (feet aka imperial measurements). Caps are one size fits all. Unfamiliar with the height conversion between the metric and imperial? Use this conversion website >

  • Can I pay by credit card?

    Yes. MasterCard and Visa are all accepted forms of payment. We do not accept Discover or American Express.

  • Can I order my Cap & Gown package online?

    For a limited time, Cap and Gown packages will be available for purchase online. We anticipate that Cap and Gown packages will also be available for purchase in person at Grad Expo in the Fall for the December ceremony. If you cannot make it to Fall Grad Expo yourself and want to take advantage of Expo-Only pricing, please send someone on behalf. They will need to know your height (in feet), your student ID number and contact information.

  • When will I get my Cap & Gown package?

    As we work to protect our staff and minimize operations for the safety of all, we ask for your understanding with our order processing window. We will work to ship all orders within 5 weeks of your order date, but please know that due to additional safety measures, we may experience some small delays. We appreciate your support and understanding through this unprecedented time.

  • I am out of town. What if I can't attend the Fall Grad Expo event? Can someone else order and pick up my Cap & Gown for me?

    Yes. You may send someone to purchase and pick up your package for you. They will not need to provide written consent from you. All they need is your personal contact information including student ID number to complete the order form as well as your height (in feet) for sizing purposes.

  • Do I return my regalia after my ceremony?

    The UCI student regalia program is a purchase, not rental, program for all students except MBA, Law and Medicine doctoral students. All other students will keep their regalia sets after the commencement ceremonies.

  • I already have a gown and only need my cap/tassel/hood. Where can I purchase these items?

    Graduating students will be able to purchase individual official UCI gowns, tassels, rhinestone “2020” tassels, caps and hoods online for a limited time. They will also be available at Fall Grad Expo. There are no walk-up sales at the Newkirk Alumni Center before or after Grad Expo. Appropriate regalia is required for all in-person ceremonies. The required items include a black cap, gown and tassel (and hood for Master's and Doctorate students). Exceptions include UCI Ph.D. professional regalia.

  • Where can I get extra commencement tickets?

    The UCI Alumni Association does not control any of the ticketing for Commencement. Please consult commencement.uci.edu for information.

  • When should I expect to receive my diploma plaque?

    • Plaques may take up to 16 weeks or longer after graduation to arrive at your household. We cannot begin production until your degree has been verified by the University Registrar.
    • Plaque production is grouped by quarter of graduation. If you do not end up finishing your degree requirements until Summer or Fall ‘20 instead of Spring ‘20, your plaque will be moved into that production timeline.
    • Plaques will be mailed to the shipping address you provided in the online form. We cannot mail to PO boxes or internationally.
    • If the address you provided in the online form will change in the next 4-5 months after you graduate (on-campus housing), please provide a different address for delivery. You are always welcome to call and check the preferred address we have on file for you.
    • Premium Life Membership covers the cost of one diploma plaque. If you have more than one degree, please let us know which degree you would like etched on the plaque. If you would like to purchase an additional plaque (one for each degree) that is an additional $50 per plaque. Please call the Alumni Relations and Membership Coordinator at 949-824-6877 to schedule a time to place the additional order over the phone.
